Queensland is such a huge and spectacular state to visit in Australia, there is so much stuff to do that you can easily spend one month of travelling just to visit the highlights. Based on my experience, I created a small list of activities that you should definitely consider when planning your Queensland holiday!
1. Slide down the natural waterslide at Josephine Falls

I did the tour of the Atherton Tablelands in my first week in Australia. My adventure down under had only just begun and I was already loving every minute of it! The Atherton Tablelands is filled with beautiful breathtaking spots, and I do mean this very literally. The water at Josephine Falls was immensely cold! Jumping right in without hesitation was my solution! I just couldn’t miss going down this natural waterslide.
2. Hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies in Port Douglas

We passed by Port Douglas on our way to Cape Tribulation from Cairns and stopped at the Wildlife Habitat. Before going into the kangaroo and wallaby area, make sure you buy enough food for these fellas! They’re a hungry bunch! And also make sure to save some food for the ones at the other side of the area. Loads of them are waiting for you (and your food) at the entrance, but there are still a few guys in the back who also want some food! I was feeling a bit heartbroken when they came sniffing my empty hand and bag to see if I had any food left, even though I’m sure they’re very well taken care of! You can also take a picture with a koala, a crocodile or a snake at the Wildlife Habitat if you want!
3. Visit the Whitsundays

A very well known to-do when in Queensland! Leaving from Airlie Beach, I did a 3 day – 2 night sail boat tour to the Whitsundays. Snorkeling, sun bathing, spotting wildlife and visiting Whitehaven Beach made for a perfect weekend! We arrived at Whitsunday Island early in the morning to make sure the tide was just perfect so we could witness this beautiful color contrast between the water and the sand. From this viewpoint, we were able to spot some lemon sharks and stingrays in the water!
4. Dolphin spotting in Noosa National Park

If you want to take a relaxing walk while in Noosa, make sure to visit Noosa National Park! From the picture location, we were able to spot a dolphin in the distance and if you’re lucky, you get to see a few koalas from the trail as well! During the walk, we stopped a few times to just admire the view. Can you believe the color of the water here? This photo hasn’t been altered in any way, that’s the way the water actually looks!
5. Spot koalas on Magnetic Island

When visiting Magnetic Island, consider doing the Forts Walk! There’s a bus stop right at the start of the trail and if you keep an eye out, there’s a bunch of koalas to spot! I found this mama koala bear at the beginning of the walk. She’s clutching her baby tightly to keep it safe from the strong winds that were blowing at that time. Even if you don’t get to see any koalas, the view from the top is definitely worth it as well! There are still a few ruins left from the second world war that you can visit. Enough lookout spots over the ocean to make your day!
6. Take a helicopter ride over the Great Barrier Reef

Of course when you’re in Queensland, you have to go snorkelling or diving at the Great Barrier Reef! But what usually isn’t on the list, is taking a helicopter ride over the reef. It’s indeed not a cheap activity but if you still have some wiggle room in your budget, please consider adding the ride as an activity! It’s a spectacular view from the helicopter. All the beautiful colours of the water and the reef are even more pronounced when viewing them from up high! I had the helicopter ride planned as a combination activity with diving and snorkeling in the reef which made it cheaper. So look out for packages!
